X's Grok Chatbot Goes Free for Some Users

Social network X is shaking things up by testing a free version of its AI chatbot, Grok.

Previously the exclusive domain of premium users, Grok is now eyeing a wider audience, potentially opening its digital doors to free users.

Over the weekend, whispers of this shift started circulating as app researchers and users in certain regions noticed Grok's free version popping up. TechCrunch confirmed that X is indeed testing this free access in New Zealand, offering a tantalising glimpse of what might be in store for the rest of us.

For those eager to jump on the Grok bandwagon, there are a few hoops to jump through. Your account needs to be at least a week old and linked to a phone number. Once you're in, you'll find some usage limits: 10 queries every two hours with the Grok-2 model, 20 with the Grok-2 mini, and three image analysis questions per day. Not too shabby for a freebie, right?

Grok-2, launched in August by Elon Musk's xAI, boasts impressive image generation capabilities, powered by Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 model. Recently, it also gained the ability to understand images, making it a formidable contender in the AI arena. By opening Grok to free users, xAI aims to expand its user base and accelerate feedback, hoping to outpace competitors like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.

In a bold move, xAI is reportedly in talks to raise several billion dollars, eyeing a valuation of $40 billion. With Grok's free version potentially leading the charge, the future looks bright—and busy—for this ambitious AI venture.
