University Accommodation Crisis: Generation Rent Unhappy

Generation Rent is raising the alarm about the affordability of on-campus university accommodation in the UK.

According to their latest study, a mere 17% of on-campus rooms are affordable for students, with first-year students being the most affected.

The activist group conducted a small-scale study across nine university campuses, including University College London, the University of Birmingham, and the University of Leeds. They analysed 49,161 rooms, excluding larger-scale rooms like studios and family suites, to determine affordability. For this research, 'affordable' was defined as costing 55% or less of the total maximum student loan.

The findings are stark. The National Union of Students recommends that 35% of on-campus rooms should be affordable by this standard. However, UK universities are currently offering only about half of this recommended quantity.

Ben Twomey, the chief executive of Generation Rent, emphasises that university should be an exciting time, not one marred by financial stress. "Too many universities claim to look out for their students’ well-being while raking it in as their landlords," he says.

Twomey further adds, "Our homes are the foundation from which we build our lives, relationships, and aspirations. Student accommodation is no different. Universities must offer their students enough affordable accommodation so that every person undertaking their degrees and qualifications is able to thrive and to reach their full potential."
