TikTok, the platform that has birthed countless viral tunes, is dipping its toes into the world of artificial intelligence (AI) by testing a feature that lets users create songs with the help of AI.
The AI Song feature generates music from text prompts using the large language model, Bloom. Users simply write out lyrics in a text field when creating a post, and TikTok suggests AI Song to add a melody to the post. Users can even choose the genre of the song.
However, don't get too excited just yet. The feature is still in its testing phase and may undergo a name change, according to TikTok spokesperson Barney Hooper. The music used is from a pre-existing catalogue within the business, and the AI pairs the user's lyrics with the pre-saved music based on the chosen genre - pop, hip-hop, or EDM.
The feature isn't available to all users yet, but those who have had a chance to play around with it have had mixed results. Some songs are out of tune, even with the availability of auto-tuning vocals. Despite the hiccups, AI-generated songs are not new to TikTok. The AI-produced Drake and The Weeknd song, "Heart on My Sleeve," went viral on the platform, proving that there is potential for AI in music creation.
TikTok is not alone in exploring AI features. YouTube is also testing a music creation function that allows users to create songs from text prompts or a hummed tune. As AI continues to permeate various aspects of our lives, it's clear that the line between human and AI-created content is becoming increasingly blurred. TikTok has updated its rules to require users to be upfront about using AI in their content, a move towards greater transparency in the age of AI.
