OpenAI has unveiled Operator, an AI agent that acts like your digital concierge, performing tasks on the web independently.
Just give it a task, and off it goes—navigating websites, filling out forms, and even making purchases, all without human intervention. Unlike traditional automation tools, Operator uses visual processing, moving a virtual mouse and typing into browsers, making it a game-changer for web navigation.
Currently available to Pro users in the US, OpenAI plans to expand Operator's reach, despite regulatory hurdles in Europe. The tool will soon be part of OpenAI’s API, promising wider accessibility.

But Operator isn’t perfect yet. During a live demo, it fumbled a restaurant booking, highlighting its early-stage quirks. Safety is also a concern, with safeguards like human confirmations and fraud detection in place to prevent mishaps.
Operator stands out from Anthropic’s ‘Computer Use’ by being directly accessible through ChatGPT, while Perplexity Assistant focuses on mobile integration. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Copilot Vision enhances browsing with real-time insights but doesn’t take independent actions like Operator.
As AI agents become the buzz of 2025, Operator is set to redefine how we interact with the digital world.
