OpenAI Unleashes Sora Turbo to the World

OpenAI has just launched Sora Turbo, its hyperrealistic AI video generator, to the public.

After a tantalising 10-month wait since its initial reveal, Sora Turbo is now available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers in the U.S. and most countries outside the EU and UK.

Sam Altman, OpenAI's cofounder and CEO, broke the news during a festive YouTube livestream, part of the “12 Days of OpenAI” series. Sora Turbo can whip up videos from text or images, offering clips between 10 and 20 seconds in various resolutions and aspect ratios. Users can even switch to Storyboarding mode to create seamless video sequences.

ChatGPT Plus subscribers can enjoy up to 50 videos per month at 480p, while Pro users get higher resolutions and unlimited creations. Tailored pricing options are on the horizon for early 2025.

Tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, aka MKBHD, spilled the beans on Sora’s release ahead of time, sharing his experiences with the software. While Sora can produce stunningly realistic footage, it occasionally throws in some AI quirks like nonsensical text and odd physics. OpenAI has implemented strict guidelines to prevent the generation of real likenesses and inappropriate content.

The launch follows a leak on Hugging Face by beta testers protesting OpenAI’s beta program practices. Despite the competition from platforms like Runway and Luma AI, OpenAI’s reputation might just give Sora the edge it needs to captivate the masses.
