OpenAI is setting its sights on superintelligence, a step beyond artificial general intelligence (AGI).

CEO Sam Altman believes OpenAI knows how to build AGI, defined as systems outperforming humans in most economically valuable work. But now, the focus is shifting to superintelligence, which Altman suggests could arrive in just a few thousand days.

Altman envisions superintelligent tools accelerating scientific discovery and innovation, leading to increased abundance and prosperity. He hints that AI agents might soon join the workforce, transforming company outputs.

However, today's AI still faces challenges, like hallucinations and high costs. Altman is optimistic these hurdles can be overcome, but acknowledges the unpredictability of AI timelines.

OpenAI has expressed concerns about safely transitioning to a world with superintelligence, admitting it lacks solutions for controlling potentially rogue AI systems. Despite this, the company has disbanded AI safety teams and shifted towards commercial ambitions, prompting some safety-focused researchers to leave.

In response to safety concerns, Altman points to OpenAI's track record, emphasising the importance of acting with care while maximising benefits.

As OpenAI embarks on its superintelligence journey, ensuring the safety of these advanced systems remains a critical challenge.
