OpenAI is gearing up for a seismic shift in its computing alliances. By 2030, OpenAI anticipates sourcing a whopping three-quarters of its data centre capacity from Stargate, a project set to be heavily backed by SoftBank.


This marks a significant pivot from its current reliance on Microsoft, its biggest shareholder and primary compute provider.

But don't expect this transition to happen in the blink of an eye. OpenAI will continue to ramp up its investment in Microsoft-owned data centres over the next few years. It's all part of a grand plan, as OpenAI's costs are projected to skyrocket, with a jaw-dropping $20 billion cash burn forecasted for 2027, compared to $5 billion in 2024.


As we approach 2030, OpenAI foresees its expenditure on running AI models, known as inference, to surpass its spending on training these models. This strategic shift indicates OpenAI's ambitious growth trajectory and its evolving partnership landscape.
