OpenAI is making waves in Asia, striking major deals to boost its AI capabilities and market reach. Fresh off the heels of Chinese AI firm DeepSeek's splash in the U.S., OpenAI is partnering with South Korea’s Kakao and Japan’s SoftBank.
The collaboration with Kakao, announced in Seoul by CEOs Shina Chung and Sam Altman, will see the creation of a Korean-language assistant, Kanana, and integration of OpenAI tech into KakaoTalk. Kakao will also use ChatGPT Enterprise internally.
Meanwhile, SoftBank is committing $3 billion annually to deploy OpenAI solutions across its operations and has launched SB OpenAI Japan to offer these technologies to Japanese enterprises. This follows SoftBank's interest in a potential $40 billion funding round for OpenAI.

Additionally, OpenAI is engaging with Korean tech giants like Samsung and SK Hynix to explore AI-powered innovations. The company is also collaborating with SoftBank and Oracle on the Stargate Project, aiming to build AI data centers in the U.S.
