OnePlus Unveils AI Eraser: A Google Magic Rival

OnePlus, the maverick tech company, has revealed its latest AI innovation: the AI Eraser.

No, it's not a rebranded Google Magic Eraser. It's a unique, homegrown solution, demonstrating OnePlus's ambition to make its mark in the AI arena.

The Oppo-owned company has likely been developing AI Eraser for a while, even though Google unveiled its version at the Pixel 6 event back in March 2021. OnePlus's press release suggests the company has built the AI Eraser from scratch, using its proprietary large language models (LLMs).

According to OnePlus, "AI Eraser is the result of a substantial R&D investment. The proprietary LLM behind the new feature has been trained on a vast dataset that allows it to comprehend complex scenes. Through this advanced visual understanding, AI Eraser is able to intelligently substitute unwanted objects with contextually appropriate elements that naturally elevate the photo’s appeal."

While an AI-powered eraser is undoubtedly a useful feature, Google has already set a high bar with its Magic Eraser. It's questionable whether it's the best use of R&D resources to compete directly with such a feature, especially when it's already available on iOS and Android devices via Google Photos.

This move seems more like OnePlus's attempt to stake its claim in what has become the year of the smartphone. Hopefully, in the future, it will use its resources to create something truly unique.

The AI Eraser will roll out to OnePlus devices this month, starting with OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Open and OnePlus Nord CE 4. However, it won't be coming to the R12-D12.
