Microsoft’s Recall AI Delayed Until October

Microsoft has hit the pause button on its much-anticipated Recall AI feature, pushing its availability for Windows testers to October.

Originally set to debut in June with Copilot Plus PCs, Recall faced a delay due to security concerns. Let's break down what’s happening.

Recall AI is designed to be a game-changer, using local AI models built into Windows 11 to screenshot nearly everything you do on your PC. This allows you to search and retrieve items effortlessly, with an explorable timeline to revisit your work on any given day. Sounds handy, right? But there’s a catch.

Security researchers discovered that the database storing these screenshots wasn’t encrypted, making it vulnerable to malware. Microsoft has since been working on significant changes, including encrypting the database, making Recall an opt-in feature, and adding authentication through Windows Hello.

Pavan Davuluri, Windows and Surface chief, announced that the feature would now be available to Windows Insiders starting in October. “Security continues to be our top priority,” Davuluri stated, emphasising the need for more time to ensure a trustworthy and secure Recall experience.

So, why the delay? Microsoft needs additional time to fully test these security enhancements. Given that Windows features typically undergo weeks or even months of testing through the Insider program, it’s possible we won’t see a full launch of Recall this year. The exact timeline will depend on when the test version ships in October.

While the delay is a bummer for those eager to try out Recall, it’s reassuring to know that Microsoft is prioritising security. After all, a feature that screenshots everything you do needs to be rock-solid in terms of privacy and protection.

Stay tuned for more updates in October, when Microsoft will provide further details on Recall’s security improvements. Until then, keep your eyes peeled for other exciting features rolling out in the Windows ecosystem.
