Meta's Llama 4: AI Models Unleashed

Meta has just dropped the Llama 4 series, a trio of AI models set to dazzle the digital world.


Released on a Saturday—because who needs weekends?—these models are here to redefine AI capabilities.


Meet the new kids on the block: Llama 4 Scout, Maverick, and Behemoth. Trained on heaps of text, images, and videos, these models boast a broad visual understanding. Inspired by the success of DeepSeek’s open models, Meta has been in overdrive, keen to outshine its predecessors.


Scout and Maverick are ready for action on Llama.com and through partners like Hugging Face. Behemoth, meanwhile, is still in training, gearing up for its grand debut. Llama 4’s multimodal features are currently U.S.-exclusive, but its AI smarts are already enhancing apps like WhatsApp and Instagram in 40 countries.

However, not everyone can join the Llama 4 party. EU-based users face restrictions due to regional AI and data privacy laws. Plus, mega-companies with over 700 million active users need a special nod from Meta to play along.


Llama 4 models are powered by a mixture of experts (MoE) architecture, making them computationally savvy. Maverick, with its 400 billion total parameters, shines in creative writing and chat, while Scout excels at document summarisation with a whopping 10 million token context window.


Meta’s Llama 4 is also tuned to tackle contentious questions more openly, aiming for balanced responses across the political spectrum—a nod to ongoing debates about AI bias.
