Consumer demand for the latest AI technology is heating up, and OpenAI's latest flagship model, GPT-4o, is at the centre of it all.
Launched on May 13, GPT-4o can handle text, speech, and video, offering real-time responsiveness and a range of emotive voice options. This innovation has driven the biggest-ever spike in mobile app revenue for OpenAI, even though GPT-4o is freely available on the web.
According to app intelligence firm Appfigures, the launch has pushed more users to upgrade to OpenAI’s paid subscription, ChatGPT Plus, which costs £19.99 per month. While GPT-4o is promised to be available to free-tier users eventually, mobile users currently need to subscribe to access the new features. This strategic move has resulted in a significant increase in mobile subscriptions.

Apple’s App Store contributed 81% of the new revenue, with the U.S. being the top market, generating £1.8 million. Other top countries included Germany (£282,000), the U.K. (£212,000), and Japan (£210,000).
