GenAI Needs Guidance

A really interesting article in the Negotiator yesterday highlighted the challenge of understanding what is an 'AI problem' versus a ‘how humans are using it’ problem.
Sue Hall, a stalwart of the Norfolk property scene, launched a heartfelt tirade against the growth of AI-generated property descriptions amongst her competition. The giveaways were Americanised spellings and repetitive words.
She’s right to complain about this – it is awful.
But that’s because it’s not the technology’s fault – it can do pretty much whatever you want. But if you don’t tell it what to do, it’s going to default to a very samey baseline.
Blaming AI for rubbish spelling and grammar is like complaining that your car should have been more careful than to plough into that tree / estate agent office (how many times?!) / articulated lorry. There are so many ways to avoid this occurring that to just let it happen is negligent in the extreme.
So yeah, Sue Hall of Arnold Keys is right that sloppy AI-generated property descriptions are terrible. Drifting in neutral into oncoming traffic is also terrible – but similarly avoidable.

Train your AI to write like you do. Show it tons of versions of your historic property descriptions and insist that it only writes in UK English. Throw in some words that you hate, insist that it never uses them and demand that it produces variance in its output. It will instantly start to pop out crafted, perfect-length, properly-spelt, interesting property descriptions in your style.
This is a really good callout from Sue – the basic AI output should not be anywhere near quality properties. But her target is wrong – Generative AI can produce exceptional, individual copy at scale; it just needs humans to give it a steer.
AI is there to help save time, like a car. Use both thoughtfully. And if you need help, ModelProp is here 😊 .
