In a bold move, South Korean startup FuriosaAI has turned down an $800 million acquisition offer from Meta, choosing instead to continue its journey of innovation in AI chip development.
According to local reports, the decision wasn't about the money but stemmed from disagreements over the post-acquisition business strategy and organisational structure.
Meta, keen to cut its dependency on Nvidia for AI-specific chips, has been on the hunt for strategic acquisitions. The tech giant, which recently unveiled its custom AI chips, is investing heavily in its AI initiatives, with a whopping $65 billion earmarked for this year alone. Despite Meta's ambitions, FuriosaAI remains steadfast in its mission to pioneer AI chip technology.

Founded in 2017 by June Paik, a former Samsung and AMD engineer, FuriosaAI has already made waves with its AI chips, Warboy and Renegade (RNGD). The RNGD chips, designed for reasoning models, have been tested in collaboration with LG AI Research and Aramco. LG AI Research is set to integrate these chips into its AI infrastructure, with a launch planned for later this year.
While FuriosaAI stays mum on the Meta offer, it's reportedly in talks to raise around $48 million to fuel its growth. This strategic refusal not only underscores FuriosaAI's commitment to its vision but also signals a shake-up in the AI chip landscape, as Meta continues its quest for chip independence.
