OpenAI's been busy sprinkling some magic on ChatGPT, and it's all about images this time!
During a lively livestream, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unveiled the first major upgrade to ChatGPT’s image-generation capabilities in over a year, and it's a game-changer.
With the power of GPT-4o, ChatGPT can now natively create and tweak images, a leap from its text-only days. This upgrade is live today for Pro plan subscribers, with a broader rollout on the horizon for Plus and free users, as well as developers tapping into OpenAI’s API.
GPT-4o takes a bit longer to "think" than its predecessor, DALL-E 3, but the payoff is in the details. Expect more accurate and intricate images, with the ability to edit existing ones, including those with people. Transformations and inpainting are now at your fingertips!

OpenAI’s secret sauce? A mix of publicly available data and exclusive partnerships, like with Shutterstock. While many AI vendors keep their training data under wraps, OpenAI assures respect for artists’ rights, avoiding direct mimicry of living artists’ works.
For creators concerned about their work being used in training datasets, OpenAI offers an opt-out form. Plus, they honour requests to block their web-scraping bots from collecting data from websites.
This upgrade comes hot on the heels of Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash, which went viral for its less-than-stellar guardrails. But with ChatGPT’s new image prowess, the future looks bright for creating stunning visuals with just a prompt!
