Canva is shaking things up in a big way.
The popular design software company is set to increase its subscription prices by a whopping 300% for some users next year. The reason? Canva says its new generative AI features are worth every extra penny.
For those using Canva Teams, the business-focused subscription plan, the price hike is substantial. In the US, for example, some users will see their annual subscription jump from $120 to a staggering $500. To soften the blow, Canva is offering a 40% discount for the first year, bringing the cost down to $300. Meanwhile, in Australia, the monthly fee for five users will rise from $39.99 AUS to $13.50 AUS per user, translating to a 68% increase for a team of five.

So, what’s behind this dramatic price increase? Canva’s communications lead, Louisa Green, explains that the company’s suite of products has expanded significantly. New offerings like the Visual Suite and Magic Studio, along with generative AI tools such as Magic Media and Magic Expand, have transformed Canva into a comprehensive workspace solution.
While these enhancements are impressive, not everyone is thrilled. Some users, previously locked into lower prices, are now being moved to the new, more expensive structure. This change, communicated primarily through customer emails, has left many feeling blindsided.
The reaction online has been mixed. Some users are considering canceling their subscriptions and switching to Adobe, especially since Canva was initially seen as a more affordable alternative. The timing of this price hike is also noteworthy, coming just after Canva’s acquisition of Affinity’s creative software suite and ahead of a potential public listing in the US in 2026.
Will Canva’s bold move pay off, or will it drive users away? Only time will tell. One thing’s for sure: the design software landscape just got a lot more interesting.
