By now, most of us are familiar with AI agents, but Asana is taking a fresh approach with its new "AI teammates."
Launched in beta, these AI teammates aim to revolutionise how work moves within organisations, creating a seamless blend of human and AI collaboration.
Paige Costello, head of AI at Asana, explains that the term "AI teammates" was chosen to shift how we think about AI at work. "We believe the future of work involves humans working with AI," says Costello. The goal is to foster transparency and structure, enabling businesses to create customised AI assistants for core workflows.
So, what does this look like in practice? Unlike rigid workflow tools of the past, Asana's AI offers flexibility. For instance, if a help ticket lacks sufficient detail, the AI teammate can return it to the submitter, asking for more information. It can even use generative AI to help craft a better ticket before routing it to the right person.

Asana leverages its extensive data on organisational workflows to train its AI models. The work graph, which maps how tasks are interconnected, helps the AI understand specific contexts, increasing accuracy. However, AI isn't infallible. "Human in the loop" is a core principle at Asana, ensuring humans supervise and validate AI recommendations.
Costello highlights that Asana focuses on high-accuracy workflows, where AI can quickly eliminate administrative tasks. The AI retrieves dynamic information, streamlining processes with impressive success rates. Yet, as this technology is still in beta, some growing pains are expected, especially when scaling up.
In summary, Asana's AI teammates promise to make work smarter and more efficient. With its deep understanding of organisational workflows, Asana is well-positioned to lead this AI-driven transformation. Keep an eye on this space—AI teammates might just be the future of work!
