Amazon is injecting a new level of intelligence into Alexa, its popular voice assistant.
During a recent press event at its HQ2 headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, the tech giant announced that it would soon incorporate a new generative AI model into its Echo devices.
Dave Limp, the SVP of devices and services at Amazon, explained that the new model would be optimised for voice and focus on aspects that customers value the most. These include access to real-time information, efficient control of their smart home, and enhanced home entertainment experiences.
The generative AI model will enable Alexa to offer more conversational interactions, considering factors such as body language, eye contact, and gestures. It will also interact with APIs to introduce innovative smart home capabilities, like interpreting descriptions like "spooky" lighting.
Moreover, the new model will give Alexa a more pronounced and opinionated personality. It will deliver personalised experiences based on users' preferences, their interaction history, and environmental information about their homes.
During a demonstration, Limp showcased how Alexa, powered by the new model, could answer questions about a favourite sports team and provide related statistics and game times. The AI model also allows Alexa to adjust its tone and responses to express affirmation, excitement, laughter, and surprise, making conversations more natural and engaging.
Amazon plans to roll out these new capabilities to customers in the U.S. through a free preview on their existing Echo devices.
