AI Revolutionises Sewer Pipe Inspections

Climate change is raising the stakes for sewage systems everywhere.

Increased flooding leads to more frequent and costly sewage failures, overwhelming outdated infrastructure. The EPA estimates a staggering $700 billion is needed to maintain America’s clean water pipelines over the next 20 years. Enter SewerAI, a tech-driven solution co-founded by wastewater industry veterans Matthew Rosenthal and Billy Gilmartin.

SewerAI leverages AI to automate data capture and defect tagging in sewer inspections. Rosenthal, who started the project while dabbling in AI courses, joined forces with Gilmartin to bring this vision to life. Today, SewerAI offers cloud-based, AI-powered subscription services to municipalities, utilities, and private contractors.

One standout product, Pioneer, allows field inspectors to upload inspection data to the cloud and tag issues, streamlining the process for project managers. Another tool, AutoCode, automatically tags inspections and creates 3D models from video footage. This tech enables more inspections per day at a lower cost compared to legacy systems.

SewerAI faces competition from the likes of Subterra, ClearObject, and Pallon, but Rosenthal claims their edge lies in the quality of their data. With footage of inspections of 135 million feet of pipes, SewerAI’s dataset is robust enough to train a highly competitive defect-detecting AI.

Investors are taking notice. SewerAI recently raised $15 million in a funding round led by Innovius Capital, bringing their total to $25 million. The funds will fuel market expansion, AI model training, hiring, and product development.

SewerAI is not just about fixing pipes; it’s about proactively managing infrastructure. As Rosenthal puts it, “Our technology enables people to do more with existing budgets, resulting in us closing our first seven-figure contracts.” Keep an eye on this space—SewerAI is set to transform the future of sewer inspections.
